Two new programs from ARW:
Rising by Degrees
The United States is facing a dramatic demographic challenge: Young Latinos are the fastest-growing segment of the population, and they are among the least likely to graduate from college. Experts say the future of the American economy is at stake, because higher education is essential in the 21st century economy. This documentary tells the story of Latino students working towards a college degree—and why it’s so hard for them to get what they want.

Workplace U
We know that a good education can be the ticket to a good job. But for many Americans, conventional school isn't working. Every school day some seven thousand students drop out of high school. Often, what they managed to learn in the schoolhouse has not prepared them well enough for the job site. This documentary reports on a growing movement to turn workplaces into classrooms and marginal students into productive workers.

MARIAN McPARTLAND'S PIANO JAZZ
Remembering Eubie Blake

This month marks the 122nd anniversary of the birth of James Herbert "Eubie" Blake. He was the last-known original ragtime pianist when he appeared on the second season of Piano Jazz at the age of 93. On this program from 1980, Blake remembers his vaudeville days, writing classics "Charleston Rag" and "I'm Just Wild About Harry." Blake and McPartland get together for duets on "St. Louis Blues" and "The Star Spangled Banner."
Airs Friday, February 5 at 9 p.m.

Rice Paddies, Termites, Coal Mines, Global Warming, And You
Carbon dioxide is the gas we most associate with global warming, but methane gas also plays an important role. Methane gas stopped increasing in the atmosphere in the 1990s, but now it appears to be on the rise once again.

The Only Way To Make Parallel Parking Less Fun? Add Math
University of London mathematician Simon Blackburn has worked out a handy formula to help city dwellers parallel park their cars. It only involves four variables, 3 parenthetical sub-equations, 6 exponentials, and 2 square root signs, so no one will mind if you figure that out real quick while traffic backs up behind you.
